Ashley Cole has left the role of manager of the England U21 side, bringing to an end a five-year period in the technical staff of the side. His departure marks the end of a partnership that has shaped a significant part of the development of the young generation of players in English football.
During his term, Cole had a key role in the work with the younger selections, and his contribution was recognised as extremely important. Lee Carsley, who took over the role in the technical staff, stated that Cole had positive and inspiring influences on the players. His expertise and experience were considered key elements in the development of the current campaign, with quality transfer of tactical knowledge.
Cole's coaching career was based on solid foundations acquired earlier in the technical work. Qualifications were obtained at Derby County, where he worked under the guidance of Frank Lampard. That experience shaped his technical profile, which he later applied in different clubs, including work in the academy of Chelsea. Prior to arriving at the current position, Cole had experience as an assistant in several clubs, including work with Chelsea, Everton and Birmingham City.
His recent change of engagement was linked to taking on a role in the Italian club Cesena, where he took on the role in March. However, following talks with the sporting director about a change in the club's strategy, a rift occurred. Cole therefore left the role in Cesena, which opened the way for a return to English football, but in a different position, removed from direct responsibility for the U21 side.
This change comes at a time when Cole, as a former player, has achieved an impressive career. He has 107 caps for the national team, as well as several trophies with Arsenal and Chelsea, including three titles in the Premier League, the Champions League, the European League, seven FA Cups and one League Cup. His experience and expertise are still valued in the football world, although his role is changing in line with new challenges and changes in the strategy of the clubs in which he works.
