Harvey Elliott returned to Merseyside earlier than originally planned during this summer transfer window, bringing his loan spell at Aston Villa to an end. The midfielder, who had moved to the Birmingham club on a one-year loan last summer, is now set for a fresh start at Liverpool and has expressed his desire to once again enjoy playing football. Elliott made his comments on his current situation and future following the match against Wrexham, in which he featured.
The loan spell at Aston Villa was described as difficult for the player, and Elliott openly admitted that the episode had not been a success. Although he had initially believed that the move to Villa would aid his personal development and that he would step out of his comfort zone, the reality was different. During his time at Villa, he made just nine appearances, totalling 277 minutes, which was not enough to trigger the mandatory purchase clause.
The loan agreement contained a provision stipulating that the club of Unai Emery was obliged to buy Elliott for £35 million if he played at least ten matches. However, Aston Villa decided not to exercise the option early in the season. Emery later described the situation as awkward for all parties involved in the deal.
Elliott is now part of the Liverpool squad preparing under new manager Andoni Iraola. The young player featured in both matches of the pre-season, including the 1-0 victory over Wrexham, which was played in New York. His return appearance in the pre-season phase signals the club's readiness to give him a second chance on Merseyside.
