Christian Eriksen has left Wolfsburg, the German second-division side confirmed. The departure comes just over three months after Eriksen collapsed during a friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine.

Eriksen had joined Wolfsburg as a free agent a year ago, after leaving Manchester United. He made 34 appearances for the club, with his contract set to run until June 2027. He has not played since June.

The Danish midfielder, who is 34 years old and has 151 caps for his country, previously played for Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan and Brentford. In 2021, he suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening match at the European Championship against Finland in Copenhagen.

"I am currently focused on being close to my family in Denmark. I am pleased that we have managed to find a solution together," Eriksen said.

"My time at Wolfsburg has been marked by many ups and downs. I know the club is in good hands as it strives to secure promotion back to the Bundesliga, and I am confident that it has a successful future," he added.

Wolfsburg stated that the decision regarding his future had to be his own. "The decision about his future had to be Christian's," said sporting director Dieter Hecking. "We wanted to give him the freedom in this special situation, and he has now requested a termination of his contract."

Hecking highlighted that Eriksen had left a strong impression on the club. "Despite the short time here, he has left a lasting impression on his teammates, our staff and the fans," he concluded.
