The president of the Union of Preporod, Željko Stipić, stated on Monday that Teachers' Day, 5 October, is an occasion to inform the public about the alarming state of computer equipment in primary and secondary schools. According to him, the personal computers of teachers are outdated or completely non-functional.

Stipić warns that more and more teachers are forced to purchase laptops independently. Without laptops, preparation for lessons is made difficult, and the modern teaching process is almost impossible to carry out, the president of Preporod points out.

Stipić poses the question of whether Croatia is so poor that the smooth operation of the educational process depends on the subsidising by those working in schools of those who work in schools. He believes that, in addition to regular maintenance, the replacement of obsolete devices must be taken into account.

Stipić adds that significant funds are required for the replacement of obsolete devices, and that those drawing up the state budget for 2027 should take note of this issue. The trade union Preporod expects that by the 2026/27 school year, all obsolete computers, both desktop and laptop, will have been replaced with new ones.

This year, World Teachers' Day is celebrated under the theme 'With you: 60 years of protecting the profession, improving the status and shaping the future'. World Teachers' Day marks the 60th anniversary of the Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, a foundational document that for the first time clearly defined the rights, responsibilities and international standards of the teaching profession.

Sixty years ago, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNESCO adopted the Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, a document that laid the foundations for the evaluation of the teaching profession at a global level.
