The world football body (FIFA) has expressed strong dissatisfaction with what it describes as coordinated and persistent attempts to undermine its organisation and its president, Gianni Infantino. Infantino, who serves as the president of FIFA, is facing intensified pressure from Europe, with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) publicly expressing a loss of confidence in his leadership.
This tension has escalated further following statements from the Norwegian football association regarding pressure on Infantino. At the heart of the dispute is the proposed Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE), which Infantino had previously rejected due to controversy. The proposal would have led to the creation of a new company responsible for managing commercial rights and ticketing, with 21 per cent of the shares in the company to be sold to a private investment firm.
Infantino had faced increasing resistance from UEFA and other European football associations over this rejected FFE proposal. FIFA, in a statement, condemned the unfounded and demonstrably false claims circulating in the media, emphasising that speculation and innuendo should not be presented as fact.
The controversy gained fresh momentum following a report by the British Daily Telegraph stating that Infantino’s alleged mistress had received a payout from UEFA following an incident that occurred while he was serving as general secretary. Such claims prompted a swift response from a FIFA spokesperson.
The spokesperson for FIFA stated that Infantino strongly rejects all allegations, regarding them as categorically inaccurate. The federation reiterated that it would fight against the spread of disinformation targeting its leader and the integrity of the organisation.
