Gloucester convincingly defeated Harlequins 48-0, propelling them to the top of the early Premiership standings. It was the second victory in two league outings and the third consecutive win in all competitions for the home side, which effectively settled the match in the first half.
By half-time, Gloucester led 24-0, with an explosive start. Ben Loader scored the first points, but Harlequins were left without Will Evans, who was sent to the sin bin in the 17th minute. Morgan then broke through the defence on the left wing and increased the lead, with his powerful advance allowing Will Trenholm to score a third point from close range. George Barton added a conversion from the touchline, while Caolan Englefield executed a spectacular 50:22 kick. Charlie Atkinson broke through one defensive line and grounded the ball, with Barton’s easy conversion bringing the home side to a 24-point lead at half-time.
In the second half, Gloucester continued to dominate. Two short passes allowed Seba Atkinson to sprint to the line and score a fifth point. Connor Slevin mishandled a restart that did not reach 10 metres, while Will Joseph made a brilliant run and pass, allowing Englefield to dive into the scoring area. Joseph then also grounded the ball to the right of the posts for the seventh point, the third in 12 minutes after the interval. Another kick towards the corner by Charlie Atkinson found Barton, who skilfully juggled and extended the lead to an eighth point for Gloucester. Joseph thought he had scored a second point in the final action of the match, but the point was disallowed due to a forward pass in the build-up. Barton overall delivered four conversions, with Gloucester scoring eight points.
Gloucester included three new signings in their starting lineup, including Welsh internationals Jac Morgan and Dew Lake. Harlequins gave the chance to debut to English full-back George Ford. Charlie Atkinson signed a new contract and linked up with the club three days before the match. The match was officiated by Sara Cox.
Gloucester’s head coach George Skivington stated that the ‘zero’ against the opponent was excellent, praising the work of Joel Tomkins in bringing the team to such a mental state. Harlequins’ head coach Jason Gilmore assessed the performance as completely unacceptable. He stated that the match could not be won with a penalty ratio of 21:5, as they struggled with possession, while Gloucester could execute 20 out of 20 in the red zone compared to their five. He added that the two points conceded in the first four minutes after the interval took the wind out of the sails of his team. Harlequins thus remain at the bottom of the table without any points.
