German battery manufacturer Varta is in a serious financial crisis that threatens the company with total collapse. In response to this situation, a group of key creditors has launched an initiative to separate the household battery business from the remainder of the company. The aim is to transfer this specific segment into a new ownership structure to secure its future.

According to the creditors' views, spinning off the household battery business represents the most promising way to secure at least parts of the company. This strategy is considered key to saving the most valuable business segment at a time when the entire Varta group is suffering from severe financial difficulties. The change in direction is justified by the extremely tense financial situation at the company's headquarters in Ellwangen, in the German state of Baden-Württemberg.

The restructuring process involves an ad-hoc creditor group comprising prominent financial institutions. Among them are Deutsche Bank, as well as specialised financial investors such as RBC BlueBay, Blantyre and Whitebox. This creditor coalition is acting in a coordinated manner to halt the company's further decline and maximise the return of funds through the targeted separation of more profitable parts.

An independent analysis conducted by consulting firm FTI revealed critical liquidity issues. According to the findings, Varta urgently needs operational liquidity in the double-digit million euro range to survive the current phase. The analysis clearly identified a lack of funds required for day-to-day operations, indicating an inability to self-finance without external assistance.

Finally, the report emphasises that additional capital is needed for the long-term maintenance of the business. Without this financial injection and the structural changes proposed by creditors, the company has no realistic chance of survival in the market. Restructuring is therefore not just an option, but a necessary condition for the survival of the part of the business that has market value.
