Lisa Murkowski, the moderate Republican senator from Alaska, has formally announced that she will not vote for the confirmation of Todd Blanche to the position of US attorney. The decision, announced early on Friday, marks a significant shift in the confirmation process.
The primary reason for her stance is deep concern that the Trump administration could proceed with implementing a proposed fund. This fund would have provided financial compensation to individuals involved in the violent protests, an action Murkowski described as a problematic political measure that could have adverse consequences for the legal system.
The proposed fund was intended to compensate rioters who stormed the US Capitol on 6 January. The incident was part of an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, in which Donald Trump was defeated by Joe Biden. Murkowski has expressed clear opposition to any institutional support for those involved in that violent overturning of the democratic process.
Despite these concerns, Todd Blanche has stated in his responses that the proposed fund is dead and will not be activated in the event of his confirmation. However, Murkah is not convinced by these claims and considers that the risk of future abuse remains.
