An exhibition of photographs by the acclaimed Croatian photographer Damir Fabijanić, titled Dubrovnik Summer House, is opening at the Dubrovnik Art Gallery. The opening is scheduled for Saturday, 24 October, at 19:00.
Fabijanić has been active in the medium of photography from the late 1960s to the present and has established himself as one of the leading Croatian artists. His works cover a wide range of themes and are stylistically highly pluralistic — ranging from photographs in the manner of reportage and documentary narratives to critical interpretations and conceptual art photography.
The title of the exhibition is a metaphor for the ideal summer house, and the installation is a kind of memento of the eponymous joint book by Damir Fabijanić, who signed the photographs, and Nade Grujić, the author of the text, published in 2003. The exhibition curator is Dr sc. Jasna Galjer, while the curator for the Dubrovnik Art Gallery is Dora Lučić. The partner of the photographic project is the Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities.
The exhibition was presented last year in the warehouse of the Ston salt mine, and subsequently in the Grič tunnel in Zagreb. The exhibition space in Dubrovnik is a former palace built in the 1930s for the Dubrovnik shipowner Božo Banac.
Fabijanić made a pioneering contribution to the presentation of national heritage through the example of Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik summer houses and Pašćip lace. His solo authorial photographic projects carried out during the Homeland War are particularly notable, among which the project 'Dubrovnik …' is the most complex photographic project realised in Croatia from the beginning of the 1990s to the present.
During the opening, Damir Fabijanić will be awarded a recognition for his contribution to enriching the Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art of the Dubrovnik Art Gallery. The artist has donated 95 works to the gallery. The exhibition remains open until 22 November 2026.
