The exhibition 'Croatian Photographers of the 50s' will be officially opened on Wednesday, 30 September at 8:00 pm at the Rab Gallery, in Donja ulica 3. The exhibition presents a carefully selected selection of photographs of the Croatian Adriatic created during the 1950s.
The black-and-white photographs on display record the landscapes, people, and daily life of a bygone era. According to the organisers, they do not only possess high documentary value, but also open up a space for meeting a world that has disappeared, preserved through photographic record.
Their recognisable elegance is deeply rooted in the international trends of the time – from the echoes of the 1955 exhibition 'The Family of Man' to the aesthetics of the celebrated Magnum agency and the popular magazines Life and Paris Match.
The exhibition in Rab presents the works of prominent Croatian photographers: Ante and Zvonimir Brkan, Josip Špralja, Toše Dabac, Nikola Vučević, Milan Pavić, Đuro Griesbach, Fernando Soprano, Aloys Orsich, Andrea Damjanić, Ivo Tolić, Zlata Lažnjak, Igor Emil, Viktor Hrelja, Abdon Smokvina, and Ervin Debeč.
The material is borrowed from the collections of the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb, the Zadar Museum, the Toše Dabac Archive, the Rijeka City Museum, and the photo clubs of Split and Rijeka. The exhibition is further enriched by works lent by the Orsich, Vučević, and Sefer families.
The exhibition at the Rab Gallery will be on display until 21 October 2026.
