Most MP Marin Miletić arrived at the beach below the Hilton Costabella hotel in Rijeka on Saturday morning. The event took place on the sea side, with Miletić arriving accompanied by several individuals. The aim of the visit was the physical removal of obstacles preventing public passage.
To enable citizens free access to the maritime domain, Miletić used an angle grinder to open entrances to the beach. This marks a continuation of a months-long dispute over access to this section of the coast. Miletić has previously removed padlocks placed at entrances, but these reappeared after his departure.
The MP stated that a beach agreement like the one held by Hilton does not exist at any other hotel in Croatia. He insists that passage to the maritime domain must be available to everyone and free of charge. He believes existing concession agreements can be amended, contradicting claims that signed contracts are not subject to change.
Miletić noted he was uncomfortable having to bring an angle grinder, but emphasised that when the state fails to do its job, he must do it for the good of the people. He claimed the matter had been reported to the State Attorney’s Office, specifically that the Croatian Office for the Suppression of Corruption and organised Crime (DORH) had been notified that entry fees were being charged at the beach.
In his statements, Miletić also commented on Ivan Lukanović, the county prefect of Primorje-Gorski Kotar. He also cited an example from Austria, where an exclusive private beach is advertised, using this as a contrast to the current situation in Rijeka.
