Wales were defeated 2-0 by Denmark in a UEFA Nations League A match, with head coach Craig Bellami stating after the match that the defeat hurt him deeply. "I am really hurt. When you see your athletic team overwhelmed... but will we advance? I think we will," Bellami said.
Denmark won at Parken with a goal from Gustav Isaksen and an own goal by Ben Davies, giving Brian Reimer's team a 2-0 victory. The hosts dominated from the start, with Mikkel Damsgaard hitting the post shortly after Isaksen's goal was disallowed for offside. Although Wales improved after the first half, they ultimately fell to two set pieces.
"I told the players before the match: 'This will be harder than against Portugal.' It was a different challenge, but a very difficult one. The best team won in the end," Bellami said. "However disappointed I am, I think the result was fair."
The defeat came just three days after Wales lost 1-0 to Portugal in Lisbon. This left Bellami's team without a win in six matches in 2026, and in the away leg of the UEFA Nations League against Portugal and Denmark, they did not score a single point.
Captain Davies believes that Wales is learning hard lessons in their second appearance in the top tier of the UEFA Nations League. "It was a tough match. They are a good team and made it difficult for us," Davies said. "It was very frustrating to concede goals from two set pieces. Matches in the UEFA Nations League are against the best teams in Europe, and it has always been clear that it would be difficult."
"If you are not at 100 percent, you will be punished at this level. We must regroup and start again on Thursday," the captain added. Wing player Sorba Thomas agreed with Bellami's words. "Fortunately, we still have two matches at home. We will have the advantage of home ground, so we must show a reaction," Thomas said.
"We will only become better. We are a small nation, but we have big hearts and belief, and it is important for us to show more on the field," Thomas concluded. Wales will have the home advantage at Cardiff City Stadium as they prepare for the remainder of the international break. Next, they will face Norway on Thursday, 1 October, followed by Denmark the following Sunday.
