Noah Caluori, a young and promising Saracens player, has made the difficult decision to postpone ligament surgery on his wrist until the summer. This decision means the 19-year-old will miss the opening match of the upcoming Premiership season, scheduled for 27 September against Leicester. Although there is a possibility he could return to the pitch a week later for the fixture against Sale, his participation in the start of the season remains in doubt.
This situation is surprising given that Caluori played one of the best seasons of his short career last term. Despite the injury, he managed to score 18 tries in 13 Premiership matches, positioning himself among the league's top scorers. His rise was accompanied by his debut for the England national team, where he scored a try against Fiji, and he appeared a week later in the victory over Argentina.
The injury occurred in December during Saracens' defeat by Exeter. Caluori landed heavily on his hand while competing for a high ball, resulting in a wrist ligament separation. Although catching high balls caused him particular pain, the young player consulted with both club and national team coaches before making his decision. Both organisations gave him full freedom to decide whether to risk playing through the pain.
Caluori chose to continue playing, even modifying his gym plans to adapt training to the pain. He publicly confirmed his intention in July, posting a photograph on social media showing him in a hospital bed with his right wrist heavily bandaged. Although his endurance drew respect, Saracens failed to finish the season in the playoffs, finishing below Exeter in the race for a top-four spot on the final day of the competition.
This situation leaves room for caution, but also hope. Although the surgery has been postponed, which may indicate a desire to recover without rushing, the seriousness of the injury is evident. Caluori, whose mother Grace is a psychotherapist, must now focus on recovery to be ready for future challenges, both at club and international level. His return to the pitch will be key to assessing his current physical capabilities.
