Sunderland returned to level on two occasions, with Granit Xhaki helping his side to an equaliser on both occasions. Enzo le Fe was key to both of the visitors' goals — first assisting his team-mate for the equaliser, and then his pass led to the second goal for Sunderland.
Antoine Semenyo scored two goals, his first of the season. Brobbey scored a hat-trick for the visitors, with his third goal assisted by Nilson Angulo. Despite this, Sunderland were left without a win.
Erling Haaland broke his streak of silence with a late goal. The assist for his goal was credited to Josko Gvardiol. Ruben Dias saved the City side from an own goal by clearing the ball off the line.
In the line-up, Iliman Ndiaye started the match in place of the suspended Phil Foden. Jeremy Doku returned from a calf injury and played his first league minutes of the season.
