Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez has launched a sharp critique of the club's board following the lack of new signings, despite the team securing qualification for the Champions League. Martinez believes that while they had a fantastic season, the club's leadership is expected to deliver more, with more players needed to compete at the highest level.

United were defeated 2-0 by Atalanta on Tuesday, leaving them without a win in five matches. Their last victory came against Azerbaijani champions Sabah on 10 September, with the only other win of the season coming against newly promoted Ipswich at Old Trafford, in a match where they had to come from behind to secure the result. Last season, United finished third in the Premier League, securing their return to the Champions League for the first time in three years.

Martinez highlighted that other teams are bringing in many players, and he expects a 100 per cent increase in investment. He is particularly critical of the approach taken by technical director Jason Wilcox. "As players, we must give more," said Martinez, adding that it is important to have a strong squad ready for a night like this. He noted that while it is easy to blame the manager and the players, other areas must also be considered.

His stance has been echoed by many outside observers, and the issue has also been raised within Old Trafford. The lack of attacking support for Bruno Fernandes and the lack of competition for Luke Shaw on the left wing have been cited as key issues. United spent £155 million on three midfielders this summer, but did not sign any players for other positions. The minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, was seen sitting next to United's executive chairman, Omar Berrada, at the Metropolitano stadium on Tuesday.

Martinez stated that the manager cannot be constantly changed, noting that last season they did everything possible to build a strong foundation. "I cannot say more," he concluded. His comments echo those made by his Argentine defensive partner, Cristian Romero, against the leadership of Tottenham last season. Romero, who had moved to Atalanta in the summer, was in the squad for the match against United.
