Spain are the new world champions. In the final at New Jersey, they defeated Argentina 1-0, with the only goal scored by Ferran Torres in the 106th minute, in extra time. This is Spain's second world title in their history.
With the victory, 'La Roja' reached a record in international football: they are unbeaten in 38 consecutive matches, surpassing Italy's previous record of 37 matches.
Spain's run has been ongoing since March 2024, when they lost 0-1 to Colombia in a friendly. Since then, they have recorded 29 wins and nine draws, capping the sequence with the world championship title.
The scorer of the decisive goal carries special symbolism. It was the 26-year-old Barcelona attacker who, in October 2021, scored both goals in Spain's 2-1 victory over Italy in the semi-finals of the Nations League, breaking the then-historical streak of 37 games without defeat for 'Azzurri'.
The first opportunity to challenge the Spanish record will come against England, who host the world champions on 26 September in London, in the group stage of the League of Nations. Three days later, Spain play against Croatia, with the latter presenting an opportunity to challenge the new champions just two months after the end of the World Cup. The group also includes the Czech Republic.
