A 13-year-old boy died in the early hours of Monday in the Spanish town of Ciudad Rodrigo, approximately 320 kilometres northwest of Madrid, during celebrations of Spain’s victory in the final of the FIFA World Cup, public broadcaster RTVE reported.
Fans held celebrations by a fountain in the Glorieta del Árbol Gordo square, with many jumping into the water. The upper part of the structure then collapsed, falling onto several people who were in the fountain.
Emergency services received the first calls about the collapse at 00:33, with reports of multiple injuries. Two people were treated at the health centre in Ciudad Rodrigo, including a minor who died there.
A disaster and emergency psychological intervention team was activated to support the family of the deceased boy, and the city council declared three days of mourning.
According to a photograph published by RTVE, the fountain was filled with fans during the celebrations, with some climbing onto its upper section waving Spanish flags.
Spain won the World Cup final on Sunday evening, played in New Jersey, USA, defeating Argentina 1-0, after which fans across the country took to the streets and squares to celebrate their world championship title.
