Two high-speed trains collided in the Spanish province of Toledo on Wednesday morning, killing at least 64 people and injuring dozens of passengers. El País reported the figures for the dead and injured.
The accident occurred when a train operated by Renfe struck an Iryo train that was stationary on the track. The Spanish minister cited human error as the cause of the incident, noting that one of the trains was allowed to proceed despite a red signal and an occupied track. Authorities are investigating the causes of the collision.
Croatian captain Luka Modrić took to the social media platform X to express his condolences to the families of the victims. He posted the message while rescue teams were still intervening at the scene of the accident.
"It is a sad news about today's rail accident in Spain. My sincerest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. I send them all my love and strength to get through these extremely difficult moments. A big thank you to everyone helping those affected," Modrić wrote.
Modrić has built a strong connection with Spain during his long career at Real Madrid, where he remains one of the most recognisable foreign players. He is a long-serving player for Real Madrid and captain of the Croatian national team.
