A former Sydney secondary school teacher, 32-year-old Tayla Lee Brailey, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for sexual offences against two teenage students. The sentence was handed down by the District Court in Parramatta, where Brailey pleaded guilty to four counts of the indictment.

The offences were committed during 2024 and included sexual acts with two students, as well as the use of telecommunications services to send and access material depicting the sexual abuse of children. Judge Elizabeth Ryan concluded that Brailey had seriously abused the trust placed in her as a teacher. She noted that such conduct seriously undermines the trust between families and the education system, and that, given the gravity of the offences, a custodial sentence was necessary.

Police first arrested Brailey in August 2024 at a school in Sydney, where she was charged with sexual assault and sexual intercourse with a person under special care. After being released on bail, she was re-arrested less than two weeks later, with additional charges relating to another teenager brought against her. It was stated during the court proceedings that the teacher had initiated contact with one of the young men.

The judge read out the contents of an impact statement prepared by one of the victim students. The young man left secondary school before completing his final year due to shame and emotional consequences; he suffered from insomnia and intrusive traumatic memories, lost contact with school friends, and felt that he was to blame for the situation he found himself in.

The court also considered letters from the defendant's family members, who stated that her actions had led to the loss of her marriage, job and reputation. A psychological report submitted to the court noted that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was likely in a manic phase at the time the offences were committed. The judge concluded that Brailey had made serious errors in July 2024 and had used her position as a teacher to betray the trust of two young people.

Brailey will be eligible for parole on 24 April 2027. The court also ordered her name to be registered on the police register of sex offenders in the Australian state of New South Wales for a period of 15 years.
