Russia launched a wave of ballistic strikes on Ukrainian cities in the early hours of Sunday, leaving four people dead and at least 36 injured, according to the BBC.
Three men, aged 24 to 62, were killed in Kharkiv, with 20 others injured. According to Oleksiy Synykhubov, the regional governor, a postal terminal was hit in the city. In Kyiv, one person was killed and 16 injured.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack on the capital as "one of the most massive ballistic attacks" since the start of the Russian invasion. According to the Ukrainian air force, 41 missiles were used in the attack, including Iskander and top-mach Zircon missiles, alongside 125 drones. Air defences intercepted 18 missiles and 108 drones.
The Guardian reports that the attack on Kyiv lasted for approximately five hours. The first sirens sounded at 01:30, with a second wave following at 06:30. A three-storey building burned in the city centre, with rescuers extracting the body of a deceased person. The Lukianivska metro station was temporarily closed after part of the ceiling collapsed due to the shockwave.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that residential and commercial buildings had been damaged, including a supermarket and a hostel. Firefighters were battling blazes in two storage facilities, while a logistics centre was hit in Bucha, near Kyiv, injuring two people.
Zelenskyy stated that Russia had fired approximately 1,450 drones, over 1,640 guided bombs, and 99 missiles in the past week. Ukraine continues to strike Russian infrastructure. According to the BBC, three tankers were hit in the Black Sea and fuel depots in the Krasnodar region. Two days earlier, Ukrainian drones had destroyed two warehouses belonging to the Russian online retailer Wildberries, resulting in the death of eight people.
According to United Nations data, June was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022, with at least 293 people killed.
