The civic initiative "Gospić is Our Home" submitted official requests to the Government of the Republic of Croatia on Friday evening. This action was carried out ahead of the planned protest "Walk for Lika, Walk for Croatia", aiming to draw particular attention to environmental issues in the region. The initiative emphasises the urgency of resolving waste disposal as a key prerequisite for protecting health and the environment.
The central demand of the citizens concerns the urgent removal of 33,000 tonnes of buried waste. A deadline of three months is requested for the implementation of this remediation. Additionally, it is proposed that the local municipal landfill "Rakitovac" be formally included in the waste management plan, thereby regulating its status and management. Beyond technical solutions, long-term monitoring is requested, involving the engagement of independent experts to assess risks, ensuring transparency and public safety.
The protest is scheduled for Saturday, with the central meeting point being Ban Jelačić Square in Zagreb. The programme begins at 11:00, when an introductory session with welcome remarks will be held at King Tomislav Square. Participants will hear a summary of the event proceedings and safety information, with organisers emphasising the message: "Let us look after one another, just as we wish our country to look after us".
The main part of the protest will feature the sharing of personal experiences, such as those related to living near the silos. Representatives of civic initiatives, including those from Siščani, as well as representatives of other associations, will speak. Their speeches will focus on known environmental issues, or "black spots" in Croatia, aiming to draw attention to the need for urgent measures. The protest will conclude with the formal submission of demands, ensuring that the citizens' voices are heard at the highest level.
