The case of illegally dumped hazardous waste in Gospić will be presented on 5 November before the European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions (PETI) in Brussels. The petition will be submitted by the civil initiative “Gospić is our home”, with Vjekoslav Bušić speaking on its behalf. The session begins at 10:20.
According to government data, 44,000 tonnes of waste are located in Gospić, of which more than 33,000 tonnes of hazardous waste have been buried in karst soil. Most of this waste was imported from Italy and Slovenia under the label of plastic for recycling.
Analyses ordered by the State Inspectorate already showed in April 2024 that the waste was hazardous, but citizens only received the full findings in July 2026. The latest results published today show that PFAS compounds in private wells are seven times above the permitted limit.
Members of the initiative will explain to MEPs and representatives of the European Commission how the competent authorities acted in this case and why they believe EU regulations on waste, environmental protection and the public’s right to information have been violated.
The Committee on Petitions session will be broadcast live on the European Parliament’s website.
