Work on the construction of the new Senior Centre in Aržan began on Wednesday with the initial excavation of earth. It is an investment worth approximately €8.5 million including VAT, currently the largest investment in the western part of Imotska krajina.
The investor is the Split-Dalmatia County, and the works are being carried out by the company Magnum supra d.o.o. from Zagreb. The centre is being built near the Josip Jović Memorial Centre. The new building will have a basement, ground floor and two upper floors, with accommodation provided for 98 people in furnished rooms. Fifty users will also have their own living room.
In addition to accommodation, the centre will provide services for 127 people living in their own homes in the western part of Imotska krajina. The facility will house a dining hall and kitchen from which elderly people not residing in the centre will also be served. The deadline for the completion of works is 18 months.
County President Blaženko Boban stated that he will open the Senior Centre in Dragljani and the Vrgorac area in a month and a half to two months, with similar projects set to proceed in Vrlika and Šolta next year. Funding for the construction has been secured from the own funds of the Split-Dalmatia County and state core funds. It is expected that tenders for such facilities from EU funds will be issued in the second half of 2027.
Mayor of Cista Provo municipality Tomislav Šitum stated that around 50 people will have jobs at the Centre. The local parish priest, don Marin Barišić, blessed the start of the works. The opening of the works was attended by parliamentary representative Ivica Kukavica, Deputy County President Ante Šošić, and the relevant heads of departments of the Split-Dalmatia County.
