The Vrbovec Pita Taste Day was held today at Restoran Marija in Vrbovec, an event where as many as 80 pies were baked. The product carries the guaranteed traditional speciality designation at European Union level, and the Vrbovec pita is one of the most recognisable symbols of Vrbovec.

The programme included a gastro workshop by Croatia’s most famous pastry chef Petra Jelenić, a demonstration of how the Vrbovec pita is made, a tamburaša performance, a creative workshop for children and a knowledge quiz. A cultural and artistic programme was also held, featuring young folklorists from IFS Brčevec and HKUD Petar Zrinski, as well as the little Vrbovec majorettes.

Jasna Benedik, director of the City Tourist Board, welcomed all attendees and highlighted that the Vrbovec Pita Day is being held for the fifth time. Gordana Rajtar, president of the Pera Association, wished everyone a welcome and said that she makes between 300 and 400 pies on an annual basis, or an average of two pies a day. She added that part of the folklore is in Gradečki Pavlovac.

Ivana Mihek, owner of Restoran Marija, said that the event has been held for five years and that they have been proud holders of the European guaranteed traditional speciality label since 2023. Restoran Marija is certified for the production of the original Vrbovec pita. Mihek called on all caterers, bakeries and those who wish to produce the Vrbovec pita to expand production slightly, and revealed that they sold over 500 pies last year and this year.

Among the visitors who enjoyed the taste of the Vrbovec pita was Vrbovec mayor Denis Kralj.
