Kirill Apostolov, a 90-year-old doctor from south-western Bulgaria, continues his daily commitment to healthcare despite his advanced age. Every morning, he takes his medical bag and heads out to see his patients, refusing to abandon his medical calling because he knows his patients have no one else to provide them with the necessary help.
Apostolov lives in the small village of Skrat, located at the foot of the Belasica mountain, near the borders with Greece and North Macedonia. His working day begins early in the morning, and he sets off from his home in Petrich at around seven o'clock. The journey to his clinic in Skrat is approximately 16 kilometres, a distance he traverses daily to provide medical care.
His patients most commonly suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems, and other chronic conditions that require constant medical oversight. His presence is therefore crucial for the regular monitoring of their health and the adjustment of their treatments.
Apostolva travels daily through the villages of south-western Bulgaria, providing medical assistance to people who often lack access to other healthcare facilities. His dedication and commitment to his work have remained unchanged for decades, making him a symbol of humanity and professionalism in the rural areas of the country.
