Keely Hodgkinson took the silver medal in the 800m at the European Championships in Birmingham on Friday. The British athlete, who recently became Olympic champion at the Paris Games, finished the race behind Audrey Werro.
The gold medal was won by 22-year-old Swiss runner Audrey Werro, who became European champion. Hodgkinson has previously achieved an impressive series of results, winning silver at three consecutive world championships, but this time in Birmingham she was unable to hold off the leader to the finish line.
Other top athletes were in the field, including Dutch runner Femke Bol. Hodgkinson's coaching team is led by Georgia Hunter Bell, a key figure in preparations for major competitions. The British athlete has previously gone head-to-head with prominent opponents such as Athing Mu from the US and Mary Morae from Kenya.
The current world champion in the 800m is Lilian Oders. The next major event for athletes will be the world championships, which will take place in Beijing, while the 2028 Olympics will be held in Los Angeles.
