British gymnast Joe Fraser won the bronze medal in the all-around final at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam. After six events, he finished with a score of 83.531.
This makes him only the third British man to win a world medal in the all-around. Before him, Dan Keatings and Max Whitlock achieved this, winning silver in 2009 and 2014 respectively.
Gold went to Japan’s Daiki Hashimoto, who triumphed with 85.988 to secure his fourth consecutive world all-around title. China’s Haonan Yang took silver with 84.199. Fraser’s compatriot Jake Jarman finished with 82.865, securing sixth place, which is also the best combined result for two British men in the all-around at World Championships.
Fraser bounced back from disappointment in the team final on Wednesday, when Britain finished fourth and thus missed out on securing a place at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Britain will get another chance to qualify at the next World Championships.
Fraser celebrated his bronze with a thumb-sucking gesture, directed at his pregnant girlfriend who followed the competition from home. “I have a pregnant girlfriend at home who has four weeks left,” Fraser told BBC Sport. “We had a team final for Olympic qualification and unfortunately we didn’t make it. Today I went out and managed to win a bronze medal. It was a real rollercoaster, but I enjoyed every second. I am grateful to be there among the best in the world. We had a good time, this is the icing on the cake.”
Jarman will compete in the floor exercise final on Saturday. He believes the British team still has much to offer before Los Angeles 2028. “The potential we have for LA is promising and exciting,” Jarman told BBC Sport. “We have a lot to give and I can’t wait to see where we will be in two years.”
