Shiho Kuwaki has secured the 2026 Women's Open title, becoming the second consecutive Japanese player to triumph in the prestigious tournament. In a dramatic finish, Kuwaki defeated Germany's Esther Henseleit in a playoff, securing her first major title.
The contest took place at the historic Royal Lytham & St Annes, where both finalists demonstrated an exceptional level of play. Henseleit managed to level the score at five under par with a stunning birdie from 45 feet on the 18th hole, forcing a playoff against Kuwaki.
The playoff lasted two holes and was marked by a moment of surprise right at the start. Although both players managed pars on the first hole, Henseleit faced an unexpected challenge when her tee shot on that hole struck an official. The shot veered into the gorse, resulting in a loss of time and position.
The consequences of the mishap proved decisive, as Henseleit was unable to save par on that hole. Kuwaki capitalised on the opportunity, maintaining her composure under pressure while Henseleit attempted to catch up in the remaining part of the playoff.
Kuwaki's success marks a significant turnaround in her career. A year prior to this triumph, the Japanese player had missed the cut at the Women's Open in Royal Porthcaw, making her current success at Royal Lytham & St Annes all the more striking.
For her victory in the prestigious event, Kuwaki won a prize of £1.11 million. This title confirms her return to the top of world golf following recent challenges in her qualifying rounds.
