The 71st World Ploughing Championship concluded at an estate in the Baranja region. The competition brought together more than 50 participants from various parts of the world, lasting two days. The event gathered experts and enthusiasts of traditional agricultural skills in one place.
Competitors were divided into two main categories according to the type of equipment used. In the category of ploughing with straight mouldboard ploughs, the first place was taken by a Slovak competitor. His success was recognised as the pinnacle of the season in that discipline, confirming the high standard of the Slovak ploughing school.
In the second, key category of ploughing with swinging mouldboard ploughs, the winning trophy was claimed by a French competitor. His success stood out as a significant moment in the competition. Croatian representatives, who competed in the event, achieved solid results. Specifically, Croatian representatives from the Koprivnica-Križevci county took 13th and 14th place. This demonstrates their skill despite the high level of competition.
Tugomir Majdak, the State Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, highlighted the importance of preserving traditional techniques. He stressed that ploughing remains a key agricultural operation, despite the increasing use of modern techniques without ploughing. This statement underscores the importance of preserving traditional agricultural skills in the modern era, highlighting their cultural and practical value.
The awards were presented in the form of statues, with competitors receiving a statue. This symbolises their excellence. The next, 72nd edition of the competition will take place in 2027 in Kenya. This will be an opportunity to spread the tradition of ploughing to a new continent. This event remains an important part of cultural heritage, linking tradition with the modern era.
