The Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi swam the second-fastest time in the history of the 200m individual medley on Monday. The 13-year-old Chinese swimmer won the race at the Asian Games in Japan with a time of 2:06.10, trailing the world record by 0.40 seconds.
The record is still held by Canada's Summer McIntosh, who swam a time of 2:05.70 last year. McIntosh is a three-time Olympic champion from Paris. The time achieved by Yu Zih is also the best world time this year and the second-fastest result in the history of the discipline in the event.
Yu Zih beat her compatriot Yu Yiting in the final, who finished with a time of 2:07.99, and Japan's Narita Mio with a time of 2:10.40. It was her second final in two days, and in both she dominated.
The day before, on Sunday, Yu Zih won gold in the 200m butterfly. After the new triumph, she said that she was even more happy that she had won this second gold than the first.
At these Asian Games, Yu Zih will compete in the 400m individual medley. Last year, at the age of 12, she became the youngest medalist in the history of the World Championships, winning bronze in the 4x200m freestyle relay.
