Jody Cundy, the British para-cyclist, lost his world title in the C4 kilo time trial after 20 years. Australian Korey Boddington beat him at the para-cycling track World Championships in the Netherlands.
Cundy first won the world title in that discipline in 2006, and in the 15 World Championships that followed, he managed to retain the world champion's long jersey. This time, he was competing for his 17th title in the C4 kilo discipline, but had to settle for silver after riding the kilometre in a time of one minute and 4.93 seconds.
Boddington beat Cundy's time by 2.25 seconds in the final run, thereby ending his 20-year dominance. Cundy, who is 48 years old, stated before the competition that age was catching up with him and that it would be difficult to add new titles to his 23 world titles in track cycling.
Cundy is also a nine-time Paralympic champion, having won three of those medals in para-swimming between 1996 and 2000.
On the first day of the championships, Great Britain achieved a series of notable results. Rebecca Newark won gold in the women's C5 kilo time trial. In the women's B kilo time trial, silver was won by Briton Sophie Unwin and her pilot Jenny Holl, while Elizabeth Jordan and pilot Anna Whitworth Hay took bronze.
Silver also went to the British pair Morgan Fice-Noyes and Christopher Latham in the men's 4km pursuit. Finlay Graham, also from Great Britain, won bronze in the men's C3 sprint final.
