US Vice-President JD Vance assessed that immigration is responsible for the violence that erupted during protests in France, while also accusing opposition Democrats of wanting the same "scenario" for the United States.
Vance wrote on the social media platform X: "Western progressives have imported the third world into France and other countries in the name of diversity and compassion. They have ignored the fundamental questions of assimilation and compatibility. We warned them this is how it would end, but they did not listen." He added: "I pray that France, a beautiful country with wonderful people, stops this madness before more monuments burn."
The US Vice-President commented on a video showing a fire in the town hall building in Limoges. He linked the situation in France to the Congressional elections to be held on 3 November. "I hope Americans are paying attention. That is the future that Democratic representatives want for our country," he said.
Vance, who is 42 years old and frequently criticises European immigration policies that he considers too lenient, is seen as a potential candidate in the 2028 presidential election.
In France, 1,200 people were arrested during the violence at protests across the country, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced. 150 police officers and gendarmes were injured.
