The 35th anniversary of the founding of the Delta special police unit was marked in Županja on Tuesday. The anniversary was marked by a ceremonial programme that brought together members of the unit, their families, and numerous guests, paying tribute to the contributions of the special unit in a series of operations during the Homeland War.
Particular emphasis was placed on the contribution made by Delta during Operation Storm, particularly in the liberation of the town of Gračac. Their role in those key moments in Croatian history was recorded as one of the key factors in the success of the Croatian army in liberating occupied areas.
The commemorations began with the laying of wreaths and the lighting of candles at memorials dedicated to fallen defenders in Županja. Wreaths were laid by the families of the fallen, as well as by the Deputy Prime Minister, Tomo Medved, among other high-ranking state and local officials, at the memorial to fallen and missing Croatian defenders.
Following the visit to the memorial, participants proceeded to the Pastoral Centre in Županja, where a ceremonial academic event was held. During the programme, the veterans' association of the special police Delta presented plaques to institutions and individuals who had distinguished themselves with selfless support over the past decades.
In addition to the ceremonial part, the programme included an exhibition of war photographs and police uniforms, the work of which was by Ivan Sluganović. The exhibition allowed those present to connect more deeply with the history and sacrifices preceding the liberation through a visual experience, and to remember the significance of the work of special units in the defence of the homeland.
