The Police Station in Knin is conducting an investigation into a case of online romance fraud in which a 69-year-old man was defrauded. According to the Split-Dalmatia County Police, the man was defrauded of thousands of euros.
It all began last July when the 69-year-old man met a woman via a social media application. They corresponded for a while, and after the woman gained his trust, she asked him to transfer money. She promised to return the money after she inherited the money and gold from her late father.
After a long period, the woman did not return the money. The victim, suspecting he had been defrauded, reported the incident to the police, who are now conducting an investigation.
The Split-Dalmatia County Police have warned the public to be cautious when communicating on social media and dating sites. Scammers, in fact, are targeting victims via the internet and using various methods to gain an unlawful financial advantage.
Perpetrators of so-called romance scams express strong feelings towards the victim, even love. After gaining the victim's trust, they request money, gifts, or bank card details, and may also ask the victim to send intimate photos or videos.
The police are therefore warning the public not to share any material with strangers that could compromise them.
