On Tuesday, 4 August, an intensified maritime traffic surveillance operation titled "Safe Navigation 2026 Senj" was conducted in the wider Senj area. The aim of this intervention was to ensure maximum navigation safety within the jurisdiction of the Senj Port Captaincy and its associated port offices. The operation was carried out in accordance with the Rules on the Safety of Maritime Navigation in the Internal Waters and Territorial Sea of the Republic of Croatia, as well as the prescribed conditions for conducting maritime traffic surveillance.
The Maritime Traffic Control and Management Service (VTS) played a key role in coordinating the surveillance, providing information support to all participating units. The VTS service relayed real-time information on all identified areas of increased vessel traffic, navigation offences, and both unidentified and identified maritime objects. This system enabled the precise deployment of resources to locations with the highest risk or traffic intensity.
Enhanced inspections of crews and vessels focused on several key areas. Particular attention was paid to controlling illegal speed in prohibited zones, which is a frequent cause of danger for other traffic participants. Inspections also covered the rental of vessels and the verification of the condition and safety of passenger boats intended for day trips.
A total of eight officials from the Senj Port Captaincy and its associated offices participated in the operation, using three vessels. During the operation, officials covered 204 nautical miles by 18:00 to visit key points in the area. Their work included monitoring all other participants in maritime traffic to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
As a result of the checks carried out, several fines were issued in the operation, with a total value of more than €6,000. Through these measures, the Senj Port Captaincy continues its active efforts to maintain order and safety at sea during the summer season.
