The sixth edition of the Sand Art festival will take place from 2 to 5 October on the beaches at the mouth of the Nereta river. The event is held for the sixth year running, bringing together contemporary art, nature, and the local community.
This is a specific form of land art on a large scale. The drawings and sculptures can be experienced only from the air, and the tide, wind, and river current inevitably return the works to nature.
This year's edition brings together renowned artistic names from Osijek, Zadar, and Pula. Under the artistic direction of sculptor Nikola Faller, Koraljko Greben, Ružica Segarić, Deborah Trusgnach, Matej Šimunić, and Mira Škerbeš will create. The artists will, together, transform the sandy surface of the estuary into a unique open-air gallery for a few hours.
The entire process will be documented by photographer Tomislav Šilovinac. His shots taken from the ground will record the effort and emotion of the artists at work, while drone footage will reveal the full scale of these fascinating creations. The drawings will be erased by the tide and wind, but they will remain permanently preserved in photographs and video recordings.
The timing of the drawing each day is strictly adjusted to the tide, with the start of work each day delayed by approximately 45 minutes compared to the previous day. On Friday, 2 October, the work will take place from 10:00 to 13:00. On Saturday, 3 October, from 10:45 to 13:00. On Sunday, 4 October, from 11:30 to 14:30, and on Monday, 5 October, from 12:15 to 15:00.
The event is held under the patronage of the Tourist Board of the city of Ploče. The project has been recognised and supported by the City of Ploče, the Dubrovnik-Neretva County Tourist Board, the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia, the Ministry of Economy, and the Plešni studio. The festival is organised by Slama – an association for promoting artistic awareness in society.
