Seventeen-year-old British tennis player Mika Stojsavljevic recorded her first main draw victory on the WTA Tour, defeating American Sofia Kenin 6-3 4-6 6-4. Kenin, a former Australian Open champion, won in Melbourne in 2020 and is now 27 years old.

Stojsavljevic entered the main draw of the tournament in Hong Kong as a lucky loser after losing in the qualifying rounds. She had only one hour's notice that she would be playing. Despite this, she defeated an opponent ranked 224 places above her in the world rankings — the Briton is 411st, while Kenin is significantly higher.

In the match, Stojsavljevic hit six winners, while her opponent hit none. She saved three of the eight break points she faced. This is not her first notable result against a high-profile opponent: in April, she beat then world No 56 Talia Gibson in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers.

Stojsavljevic started playing tennis at the age of seven at the Ealing Lawn Tennis Club in north-west London, after watching her brother train. In 2024, she became the first Briton in 15 years to win the US Open junior title, reaching a career-high fifth place on the junior world rankings. She turned professional in 2025, and earlier this year reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 125 tournament in Birmingham.

In the second round in Hong Kong, she will play world No 67 Zeynep Sonmez. At the same tournament, Katie Boulter lost 7-5 6-4 to American Claire Liu, ending her season.
