Tang Jing was disqualified in the quarter-finals of the judo tournament at the Asian Games in Nagoya. The reason was unsporting behaviour — during the fight in the 70kg category, she bit Japanese rival Rin Maeda.

The incident became clear when Maeda showed the referee her left forearm, on which a bite mark was visible. This occurred after a specific move in the fight. The referees then reviewed the video footage and made the decision to disqualify Tang Jing for unsporting conduct.

The Japanese judoka’s coach, Maki Tsukada, described the injury. 'The wound looked as if it was about to start bleeding. The bite mark was very clear and distinct,' said Tsukuda.

Tang Jing, a three-time medallist at the Asian Games, was unhappy with the referees' decision. Nevertheless, after the decision, she shook hands with Maeda and left the arena without speaking to the media.

Maenda commented on the incident. 'Things like this do not happen often. I did not even know what would happen, but I told the referee what had happened,' Maenda stated.

The Japanese judoka ultimately won the gold medal. In the final, she defeated Azhara Askhata from Kazakhstan.
