The exhibition 'From the History of Sisak Handball – Return to the Premier League' was opened at the Vlado Gotovac Library in Sisak, with the first domestic match taking place at the Zelene Brijeg venue.
The exhibition, which marks the return of RK Sisak after 13 years to the highest division of Croatian handball, presents a cross-section of the city's rich handball history, from its early beginnings and great player and coach generations to the present day success and return among the best Croatian handball clubs.
The exhibition was created in cooperation with the City of Sisak, the Sisak City Museum, the Vlado Gotovac Library, and RK Sisak. Over seven decades, the history of Sisak handball has been written, with the first club in the city established in 1953.
The first international match was played in 1955, when Segesta hosted Swedish club Boras in Sisak. Over the years, numerous clubs and national teams have visited, including Austrian club Wagner Büro and French side Cannes, and the Japanese women's team visited in 1983.
The local club also competed in European cups. The fourth place in the City Cup in the 1995/96 season is particularly remembered, when RK Sisak reached the top eight of the competition in the European competition. The European appearances continued through the Challenge Cup in the 2009/10 and 2011/12 seasons, and the EHF Cup in the 2012/13 season.
After 13 years, RK Sisak has returned to the Premier League. The mayor of Sisak, Domagoj Orlic, highlighted that the club's return to the top division represents a great success for local sport, as well as a continuation of the city's handball tradition. The club started from the lowest, fifth level of Croatian handball, and in the youth categories, it secured ten national championship finals, won four medals, and produced nine U19 and U21 national team players.
The exhibition will move to the Zelene Brijeg sports hall ahead of the first home match of RK Sisak in the Premier League. On Saturday, 19 September at 18:00, RK Sisak will host MRK Trogir, with the exhibition open to fans and visitors before the match. The return of RK Sisak to the Premier League marks a return to the elite Croatian handball community.
