John Turner, the fast bowler who played for Hampshire and the national team, has officially announced the end of his professional career. The reason for the decision is persistent injuries that have jeopardised his sporting future in the long term. Turner is 25 years old, and his active play for the club ended last summer.
The most serious obstacle in his career was a stress fracture, for which he was out of action for more than a year. Although he was previously part of the wider plan for the national team, injuries often disrupted his plans. Thus, he was selected for the England squad for the T20 series against New Zealand, but the injury prevented him from playing.
Turner, born in South Africa, managed to achieve a representative career despite health issues. He made two appearances for England in One Day Internationals and two in T20 matches. His appearances for the national team took place in 2024, primarily during England's tour of the West Indies.
At the club level, Turner made his debut for Hampshire in 2021. Over five years, he played a total of 51 matches in all formats, holding 97 wickets. He stood out in the 2023 season in the T20 Blast, where he recorded impressive statistics.
During that competition, Turner took 21 wickets at an average of 11.76, with an economy rate of 6.67. His first professional wicket fell to former England captain Alastair Cook, marking the start of his successful, but unfortunately, prematurely ended career.
