Aaron Ramsdale is today the fourth goalkeeper at Southampton, a club in the Championship, and has not made a senior appearance this season, despite being 28 years old. It is a fall from grace that would have been hard to imagine just a few years ago, when he was on the verge of a title with Arsenal.
In April 2023, Ramsdale was close to winning the Premier League with Arsenal. However, in a match against Southampton at the Emirates Stadium, he made a costly mistake that allowed the visitors to take the lead, and the match ended 3-3. That draw contributed to the collapse of Arsenal's title challenge in the 2022-23 season. Had Arsenal won, the title would have been in their hands, but the draw handed the initiative to Manchester City, who made the most of it.
Four months later, Arsenal signed David Raya from Brentford, who quickly took over as the first-choice goalkeeper. Ramsdale fell to a lower position in the hierarchy in the 2023-24 season, losing his starting spot after just four league games. A further mistake followed, against Brentford, after which he was replaced. Arsenal won that match in March 2024 2-1. Ramsdale did not play for Arsenal again after that.
Arsenal paid £24 million for Ramsdale from Sheffield United in August 2021, a club that had been relegated from the top flight. Ramsdale pushed aside Bernd Leno and helped Arsenal finish fifth in the 2021-22 season, after the previous year the club had finished eighth. He was included in the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) team of the year and was named goalkeeper of the year at the London Football Awards. He had previously saved a free kick from James Maddison against Leicester City, and Peter Schmeichel described that save as 'the best he had seen in years'.
In August 2024, Ramsdale was sold to Southampton for £25 million. He returned from the 2024 European Championship with England, where in Germany he was the backup without making a single appearance. Southampton were managed by Russell Martin, and the club had just secured promotion. Ramsdale made 30 league appearances for Southampton, but the club finished at the bottom of the Premier League with only 12 points, the lowest total in the history of the competition. Ramsdale received 66 goals, more than any other goalkeeper in the 2024-25 season, which was his fourth relegation.
He had previously experienced relegation with Chesterfield on loan in 2017-18, with Bournemouth in 2019-20, where he was named player of the year, and with Sheffield United, the club from which he came in 2017. At Bournemouth, for two years he was the backup to Asmir Begović, before making the breakthrough. Begović stated: 'Above all, Aaron is a fantastic goalkeeper.' He added: 'We first worked together about nine years ago and since then he has gone through an incredible journey, playing at the highest level.' He also recalled: 'I remember that my task when I arrived at Bournemouth was to mentor and set the tone for some of the younger goalkeepers, among whom was Aaron Ramsdale.'
The relegation of Southampton prompted Ramsdale to seek top-flight football again, so for the 2025-26 season he went on loan to Newcastle United. There, in 23 appearances across all competitions, he kept only two clean sheets, and in the Premier League he made 12 appearances. Neither he nor Nick Pope managed to secure the first-choice goalkeeper spot. In the round of 16, they conceded seven goals in a 7-2 defeat to Barcelona, which was the most goals he had ever conceded in a single match.
