Vincenzo Montella is set to conclude his tenure as head coach of the Turkish national team. According to unofficial reports from Turkish media, the Turkish Football Association has decided to part ways with the Italian coach following Monday's defeat, with the terms of the separation already agreed.
The decision followed a 3-1 loss in Bologna, the fourth consecutive defeat in the Nations League. Turkey had previously lost to Italy 4-1 in Bursa, as well as to France and Belgium, further solidifying the decision of the association's leadership.
Montella had extended his contract until the 2028 European Championship in June, but due to the early termination, he is to receive a severance payment equivalent to five months' salary, amounting to €915,000. He leaves the bench after three years, during which he guided the national team in 40 matches, recording 21 wins, five draws, and 14 defeats, including six in the last seven matches.
Despite the poor end to his tenure, Mont achieved significant results with Turkey. He led the team to the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship and secured qualification for the World Cup, the third in Turkey's history and the first in 24 years. At the World Cup, Turkey finished bottom of their group, behind the USA, Australia, and Paraguay.
The main candidate to take over the role is Arda Turan, a former midfielder for Galatasaray, Atletico Madrid, and Barcelona. Turan currently serves as the coach of Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk.
