A rare case of workplace malaria transmission has been recorded at an airport in Germany. According to available information, one worker died from the disease, while five of his colleagues underwent treatment to protect themselves from potential infection. This incident has highlighted the sensitivity to health risks within specific working environments, although such occurrences are extremely rare compared to typical infection cases.
The key factor in this case is the manner in which the infection occurred. Investigations have shown that the mosquitoes, which transmitted the infection, arrived at the airport location by travelling on an aircraft. This phenomenon, although rare, underscores the importance of strict control and preventive measures in areas where mosquitoes are expected to be present, particularly in environments with high traffic of passengers and goods.
According to data, the workers fell ill between 4 and 6 July, indicating that the infection occurred during that period. Malaria in Germany almost exclusively occurs in travellers who have been infected in areas where the disease is endemic, which further highlights the rarity of such cases within the country. A previous similar case was recorded in 2023 in Frankfurt, indicating that this is a recurring issue requiring attention and appropriate preventive measures.
