Saimoni Vunilagi, a Fijian professional, died on Friday, 7 August, in Japan. The cause of death was suspected heatstroke, confirmed after the player showed signs of a severe condition following extreme weather. The death occurred in the city of Fukuoka, where Vunilagi was training for his club.
The tragedy occurred three days earlier, on Monday, 3 August 2026, during a team training session. At that time, Vunilagi showed symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke. After his condition was identified, he was taken to a medical facility for treatment, but unfortunately did not survive. Temperatures that week reached 35 degrees Celsius, a significant factor in the creation of dangerous conditions for physical activity outdoors.
The player was playing for Kyuden Voltex at the time of his death, a rugby club based in Fukuoka. The team competes in the second division of Japanese rugby. The athlete had arrived at Kyuden Voltex in July, meaning he had been at the new club for a very short time before the tragic incident. Prior to joining this club, Vunilagi had played for Tokyo Sungoliath in the Japan Rugby League One.
The deceased player was 26 years old and played on the field as a back rower. He was a physically imposing athlete, standing 1.96 meters tall and weighing 117 kilograms. His death caused shock in the rugby community, particularly as it involved a young and experienced player who had recently changed clubs.
