One person died and several were injured in an incident on Monday afternoon at a Six Flags theme park, Cobb County police said.
The park is located approximately 15 miles (25 km) northwest of Atlanta. Cobb County police records do not disclose how the person died, nor the cause of injuries to other participants in the incident.
Several media outlets reported that the person fell from the Goliath ride, citing witness accounts and local officials. The ride, which opened in 2006, reaches a maximum speed of 70 mph (110 km/h) and has a drop of 175 feet.
A spokesperson for Six Flags stated that the park and local authorities responded immediately and are fully cooperating with the local investigation into the incident. "We are deeply saddened by the incident involving a guest at our park today," the spokesperson said.
The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of ride safety at the Six Flags chain. Late last month, Six Flags Magic Mountain in southern California announced it was withdrawing its famous X2 ride amid ongoing legal proceedings in which it was alleged that the ride caused severe brain injuries.
Six Flags recently settled a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of a 22-year-old man who died after a ride in 2022. Three additional lawsuits were filed last week, alleging traumatic brain injuries.
