Australia has officially announced the introduction of mandatory vaccination against the H5 virus for captive birds. Federal Minister for Agriculture Julie Collins said on Tuesday that the primary focus of the campaign would be to vaccinate targeted species of captive birds. The first doses of the vaccine will be administered in the coming days and weeks, indicating a rapid response by the government to the current epidemiological situation.
In addition to protecting captive birds, the federal government is offering vaccination to some wild birds. However, authorities are aware of the significant logistical challenges involved in such an approach, particularly when it comes to capturing wild animals in their natural habitat.
The government has openly acknowledged that catching wild birds, let alone vaccinating them twice, is extremely difficult. Despite these challenges, efforts are being made to extend protection to wild populations in an effort to curb the spread of the virus in the wild.
