Member states of the European Union have made a key decision to allow the procurement of critical components for American Patriot air defence systems. This exception to the general rule of purchasing European products is necessary to ensure that Ukraine retains its defensive capabilities, given that such specific systems are not available within the European industrial base. This exception is provided for in cases where the purchase of standard European products is not feasible, confirming the specific nature of the security challenges on the ground.
Within this package of support, Ukraine will receive a payment of €3.2 billion. These funds are intended primarily to strengthen air defence, which is of critical importance given that Ukrainian forces are currently not equipped with a sufficient number of air defence systems. As they face increasingly intense attacks from the Russian military, which include the use of missiles and drones, these financial resources are crucial for maintaining defensive capabilities.
This payment is part of a wider support package of €90 billion, aimed at maintaining the resilience of Ukrainian society and the military. €8.4 billion has already been paid out under previously approved loans, with the aim of ensuring continuity of support in the context of an ongoing armed conflict. This measure is part of a broader strategic framework aimed at ensuring that Ukrainian forces have the necessary resources to defend their sovereignty.
