An agent with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot a man in New York on Thursday afternoon, federal officials said. The man was conscious and was taken to hospital, officials said.

The shooting immediately sparked outrage among local residents and elected officials in the neighbourhood. According to initial reports, the agents surrounded the man and a five-year-old child in his car, Councilman Zohran Mamdani said in a statement on Thursday evening.

The child was not physically injured, Mamdani added. Details of the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and the condition of the wounded man, remain unclear.

The incident prompted reactions from the community and local politicians, who demanded answers regarding the course of the operation. Federal officials confirmed that the shooting occurred during a law enforcement operation, while the councilman insisted that a child was present in the vehicle.

Tensions surrounding ICE's conduct have intensified following the incident, and authorities are expected to investigate all aspects of the shooting. So far, it has not been announced whether an official investigation has been launched, nor what consequences the agent involved may face.
