A Philadelphia police officer was killed and another injured on Saturday after they responded to a call about an armed man, authorities said. Shane Seiber, 40, was killed early Saturday morning in west Philadelphia, city Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said.
Seiber was a 10-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department. He and another officer were transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where the surviving officer underwent surgery. According to Bethel, the surviving officer is in stable condition.
Bethel said the suspect is in custody. Citing law enforcement sources, the Philadelphia Inquirer identified the suspect as Eric Lewis. The newspaper reported that 35-year-old Lewis is employed by the Philadelphia Water Department.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said he had ordered flags to be flown at half-mast in memory of Seiber. Seiber leaves behind a wife and two children: a seven-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl.
According to data from the Officer Down Memorial Page, Seiber was the at least 376th officer of the Philadelphia Police Department to die in the line of duty since 1851. He was the 129th of those officers to be killed by gunfire, the memorial site states.
