The 35th anniversary of the death of Croatian police officers was marked in Struga Banska on Sunday, their names forever inscribed in the history of the Homeland War. On this occasion, those who laid down their lives in defence of the nascent Croatian state during the conflicts of the 1990s were remembered.
One of the police officers remains listed as missing, leaving an open wound for families and comrades that has not healed in years. The memory of these tragic events, which took place in July 1991, is maintained as a lasting tribute to the victims.
In memory of the fallen and missing colleagues, family members of the fallen police officers gathered at the memorial. Their closest relatives attended the commemoration to pay tribute to their loved ones who had made the greatest sacrifice for the freedom and independence of Croatia.
In addition to family members, comrades of the fallen and missing police officers gathered at the memorial. Their presence symbolises the connection and solidarity within the police community, and the shared memory of the events that marked the beginning of the Croatian war of independence.
Representatives of the state institutions, who confirmed the importance of preserving the memory of the victims of the Homeland War, were present at the ceremony. Their participation highlights the state's care for preserving historical truth and respect for those who defended the Croatian state.
Representatives of the local and regional self-government also gathered at the memorial. Their presence shows that the memory of these events is nurtured at all levels of governance, from local to state level.
